His Faithful Love Endures Forever

Psalm 136 is different.

There are 26 verses in the chapter, and they all end with the same five-word phrase: His faithful love endures forever.

Every verse ends the same way.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is the only Psalm to follow such a pattern. Why would a message be repeated 26 times, unless it was of the utmost importance?

Of all the things God could choose to say, this is one of the most crucial. Partly because it’s a message we need cemented in our brains time and time again.

God wants to remind us of His love.

Life is hard, we all know this. I’m not here to go into details, but I think we’ve all thought the same thing during our most difficult times: How could God let this happen?

I once heard a powerful quote on this exact topic:

When something bad happens, don’t think “Why me, God?” Think, “Why not me?”

We like to blame God for our troubles.

So often when things are challenging we direct our anger at God, asking Him why He did this. It feels personal. But let me tell you, this is the one area where God is not personal. He’s not singling you out or trying to mess up your life.

The true question is, Why shouldn’t this happen to me? Why shouldn’t I flunk a test in school, get fired, or learn that a relative has cancer? What’s one good reason that should exempt me from this?

Why vs. Why Not, that is the question.

The answer, simply put, is that we live in a broken world, ruled by the devil. People too often make the mistake of blaming God for what happens here on earth, saying, “Why would God do this to me?”

What they need to realize is that deliberately causing something to happen and merely allowing it to happen are two very different things.

God wants to remind us of the truth.

When things get hard, God wants you to know that He’s there for you. That nothing that happens can make Him care about you less. He invites you with open arms to come to Him when things are hard. Because He didn’t cause our mistakes or hardships – humanity’s sinful nature did.

This is why God sent us a Saviour – because He does love us. He loved us so much that He sent His one and only Son to die for us. God truly does care about you, especially during your hard times.

God loves us.

His faithful love endures forever. God loved His people so much that he put up with them for generations, and even then, wasn’t willing to destroy them. He gave them chance after chance, and continually forgave them. He loved His people, and He loves you.

So next time things are hard, I hope you remember this. God’s faithful love endures forever. In fact, it’s the only thing in this world that will endure forever. Let me say it again: God will always love you. He will always care about you. He cared enough to put it in the same Psalm 26 times, which is saying something, is it not?

Yes, things will get hard, and the devil will try to make you believe it’s God’s doing. But that isn’t the truth. Whenever you feel this way, all you need to do is simply remember that…

His faithful love endures forever.
