Is Truth True?

Recently I attended a conference.

Over the course of the day, I got to hear four amazing talks from Sean McDowell, the world-renowned author, podcaster, speaker, and Doctor of Apologetics. Long story short, he did a phenomenal job.

Of all his talks, one part stood out to me in particular. Dr. McDowell raised the question: What is truth? And what if one person’s truth is counter to another person’s truth?

Is Truth True?

There are many different religions in this world, all with very different beliefs. Some people try to say that all religions lead to God, but they can’t. There are too many contradictions between them.

The only logical option then, people think, is to let everyone believe whatever they think is true. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “What’s true for you is true for you, and what’s true for me is true for me.”

Can all roads be right?

Can all paths lead to the same destination? As the old saying goes, “All roads lead to Rome.” But the answer is no. All roads do not lead to Rome. The correct statement should be, “All roads lead from Rome.”

Everyone is born into the same life on earth – it’s where they choose to go from there that matters.

My Truth vs. Your Truth.

Still, people say it’s fine for us Christians to believe what we want, as long as we let others believe what they want. “Follow your heart,” as the saying goes. I think we all know where following our heart really leads though…

One of the most “crippling” statements agnostics use is, “There is no truth.” Because if there is no truth, then there is no God. And if there is no God, they can believe whatever they want.

But wait, did you catch the fallacy?

Truth has to exist.

If someone is confident that there is no truth, doesn’t that statement, by their own logic, have to be true? Hang on, but if there is no ultimate truth in this world, then how can a person truthfully say that “there is no truth”? To prove that statement true, there has to be truth backing it.

The same thing applies when people look at Christians and go, “You shouldn’t judge!” Wait, isn’t that very statement judging?

There is only One truth.

As much as people may try to disprove it, there is truth in this world. There has to be. You can’t prove the opposite – the very act of doing so verifies that there is truth. This leaves you with a decision: what or who will you accept as the truth?

As Jesus Himself said in John 8:32 (NIV), “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Next week I’m going to tell you why myself and millions of others throughout the ages have chosen to put their trust in Jesus, even though there are thousands of other beliefs and religions worldwide.

The world wants us to believe that everything – except Christianity, of course – can be right. They want us to not just tolerate but embrace their beliefs. But it is not the truth. Only Jesus is the way, the truth, and the light.

Will you accept the truth that Jesus is Lord of all? Will you make Him the true Lord of your life? And if you already have, will you do everything you can to teach others about His truth?

There is no truth apart from Jesus.

  1. Wow, great post, Samuel! I especially love the line about all roads leading from Rome, not too it; I’ve never thought of it like that before.

  2. Wow, One thing I would like to say relating to this post is that Christianity is a very different religion compared to any other, in that we can’t earn eternal life, but rather it’s given to us. Also, Christianity is likely one of the most hated religions and also one of the fastest growing one too.

    1. So true! God gifts us His grace – we can’t earn it by any means. And no matter what happens, Christianity keeps going. It can’t be stopped.

  4. […] I could list every scheme the devil has for knocking us off Jesus’ 180º path, but neither of us has time for that. Rather, I’d like to zone in on his most dangerous tactic: destroying truth. (If you want to read more, here’s a post I published last year called Is Truth True?) […]
